DNS Name Servers
Posted by Darktwist, 04-14-2012, 08:29 AM |
I am going to purchase VPS (off-site) for Hosting company website, clients billing/support. If anything happens to the Shared/Node Servers, customers can still be reached.
I would like customers use my name server, for example:
ns1.HostingCompany.com
ns2.HostingCompany.com
Where I would setup the name server? On the shared server or VPS (off-site)?
If hosting company website (VPS) went down then all customers website will be down...
how it should be done?

You should get 2 VPS's or a smallish shared hosting account and a VPS account so that you can host your company website on a separate server then where you host your customers. This would be a good practice to follow and also help with ensuring your chances of your customers being able to reach your website if their own site goes down.
Then you could setup a new nameserver DNS entries like
Used for main company hosting account
ns1.HostingCompany.com
ns2.HostingCompany.com
Used for customers hosting vps server
ns3.HostingCompany.com
ns4.HostingCompany.com
You would register the Nameservers DNS at where ever you registered your domain name and then also setup the DNS entries on the servers you are hosting the account(s) on

To have a decent system correctly setup you will need to have at least 2 small VPSes in different locations using cPanel DNS ONLY to setup the DNS cluster.
You will then need to have a seperate VPS for your corporate website away from any location which you already have existing service in.
I hope this helps.

You will need to register them at your domain register.
ns1 for one IP, and ns2 for another IP. And as cd /home mentioned... you can have the second nameserver use a IP from a different subnet so all looks good at intodns.com

Yep that make much sense now, thanks.
So basically I need 3 VPS? so like this:
VPS 1 = cPanel DNS ONLY (ns1.mycompany.com)
VPS 2 = cPanel DNS ONLY (ns2.mycompany.com)
VPS 3 = Company Site / Client Billing (Assign to ns1/ns2.mycompany.com)
Server = Shared Server (Assign to ns1/ns2.mycompany.com)

I use DNS Clustering setup in cPanel/WHM for the backup/shared/reseller servers. You could use the same setup.
You don't have to use cPanel DNS only.
