cPanel DNSONLY Cluster Migration
Posted by Hostagon, 04-12-2012, 08:14 PM |
Hello all,
Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, but any help would be appreciated with this scenario I'm doing in "upgrading" my DNS infrastructure a little bit better.
Currently, I have two VPS servers that run production WHM/cPanel, where the first server is ns1.domainname.tld, and the second server is ns3 and ns4.domainname.tld. ns2.domainname.tld is already a dedicated DNSONLY VPS. i.e:
ns1 - WHM/cPanel server1
ns2 - DNSONLY
ns3 - WHM/cPanel server2
ns4 - WHM/cPanel server2 (diff IP but on the same subnet (lame, I know!)
What I would LIKE to do is:
ns1 - DNSONLY migrated from server1, turn off nameserver services on server1
ns2 - Leave existing DNSONLY
ns3 - NEW DNSONLY in a different geo area
ns4 - Reserved for another future DNSONLY
All new NS config calls for different subnet IPs, different network links (level3 vs cogent, etc), and at least two different geo locations.
server1 - remains the same, with the same zones, etc
server2 - also remains the same, same zones.
I'm totally confused with the DNS Clustering settings of Standalone vs Sync vs Write-only. Currently, all three servers are set to Sync amongst each other and it has worked fine. The trouble comes when ns1/server1 goes down, then DNS totally goes down. ns2 doesn't seem to take care of the slack. So this is why I want to upgrade my DNS infrastructure
My biggest worry is breaking zones when i set up the new DNSONLY ns1 in place of the existing, main ns1 for server1.

Your infrastructure is likely fine it sounds like you are syncing it incorrectly hence the problems you are having.
If you do it correctly then it shouldnt happen because even if NS1 fails NS2 will take over and vice versa hence you have 2 or more nameservers

Good to hear from you cd/home! I have actually seen some of your advertised cPanel management service posts and have been meaning to contact you, but I don't use MSN.
Anyway, since you are clearly an expert in this, would you mind I hire you to help me directly?

Unfortunately am not allowed to advertise/self advertise unless its in the offers/requests section. (As per the forum rules)
But what I can say is if your looking to hire someone having the post moved to that section would be best as people can then contact you regarding your request, etc
Regards,
