AT&T Blacklist Removal

Posted by bcred, 04-12-2012, 05:15 PM
I recently noticed that all email sent from my server to any AT&T (SBCGlobal, Bellsouth etc) email address gets blocked with a message similar to the following: SMTP error from remote mail server after MAIL FROM:: host sbcmx8.prodigy.net [207.115.36.22]: 553 5.3.0 nlpi107 DNSBL:ATTRBL 521< 199.230.54.82 >_is_blocked.__For_information_see_http: //att.net/blocks Or SMTP error from remote mail server after MAIL FROM: SIZE=3218: host aln-mailrelay.att.net [12.102.252.75]: 521-199.230.54.82 blocked by sbc:blacklist.mailrelay.att.net. 521 DNSRBL: Blocked for abuse. See http: //att.net/blocks The sending domain is @iphonejailbreakunlock.org I don't send any bulk emails, and I checked all the blacklists I could find and the IP is not on any of them. I have contacted AT&T, but I was hoping to find the cause of this to get it done faster. Unfortunately my host, ServInt, have been extremely poor in support, in my opinion, in refusing to even look into this until hearing a response from AT&T. Could this have anything to do with SPF records or reverse DNS? Thanks for any help.

bcred, As a matter of policy, we cannot discuss admin issues in a public forum like WHT. If you feel your problem is not being addressed in a satisfactory fashion, please use your current customer portal ticket to request that the situation be brought to the attention of our Admin department. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. ServInt

AT&T maintains their own list so if you are blocked by them you will have to work with them get unlisted. Usually they respond pretty quickly but lately not so much.

Thanks. Are there any server configuration requirements they usually have? It seems very weird to me, as I've sent maybe 100 total emails over a 3 week period. Hardly spamming. And it appears the IP was pre-emtively banned from day 1.

Thank you for your reply. I will update my ticket. May I ask if it is your policy to have customers handle their own blacklist removal for IPs on your VPS servers. I've generally had good service with you, but this seems quite a bit to be asking of your paying customers.

No. Typically getting delisted is just a matter of filling out their form and eventually you'll hear back stating you've been delisted. Though with a repeat offender this can require a bit more working with them to make sure the spamming stops. If your IP address was blocked initially then I would take this up with your provider. They quite possibly could have had a compromised VPS on that IP that was spamming, etc. before it was allocated to you. However, for the sake of getting such an issue resolved quickly just fill out the form and work with AT&T directly.

Yeah, I have to assume it's from a former user of the IP. I will pursue it through both my host and AT&T directly. Thanks for your advice. I wasn't sure whether there was anything specific about their lists, and just got a bit worried at their expected 2-3 business day reply, since I've got customers who not only can't get their login information, but also can't contact our support.

It looks like your IP (most likely the whole block) made it onto the ATT blacklist. You can do a check here: www unlocktheinbox com/blacklist/bl Also, read up some info on being blacklisted in case your config was responsible. Remember, though, that someone else in the same IP range as you could be responsible for the blacklisting. Being Blacklisted: www unlocktheinbox com/resources/beingblacklisted/

199.230.54.82 shows up as being blacklisted for you? I just checked on the link you provided and it showed up as clean on every server listed

I didn't run the test before providing the link but I went back and took a look. Here's the thing I noticed... blacklist.mailrelay.att.net is not in the list they check. I'm going to send them a request to add it on the contact us page. You should do the same maybe if we both do it they will think its more important to do.

Did you know of any way of checking directly if an IP is blacklisted on blacklist.mailrelay.att.net?

Posted by justintoxicated, 04-12-2012, 09:20 PM
the easiest way is to send an email to one of their domains. the feedback you got from the server verifies the IP is definitely blacklisted. 199.230.54.82 blocked by sbc:blacklist.mailrelay.att.net. 521 DNSRBL: Blocked for abuse. See att net/blocks Check out that page, att net/blocks They have some more info there and looks like a tool for requesting your IP be removed. I'm going to hope you're hosting provider doesn't have to contact them because that could take a while to get rolling. Did you read that article I linked at unlocktheinbox.com? The one about being blacklisted? Also, was this your first time trying to send an email and it coming back with that error? I don't have enough posts to include links yet so I've had to put spaces in and take out the http part.
