Spam Problem

Posted by novahost, 01-05-2007, 06:07 AM
Hello I have a site with more then 3000 afilliates to whom I pay comission to sell my services. The problem is that some of those are sending SPAM (my host received complaints) and I have been very happy with my host, JODOHOST, but they say that if someone send those unsolicited mails again, containing my domain on the e-mail, I have the risk of being banned from the server. They have gave me a last warning, and I am gonna register another domain, separeted from my company, just to give the url for those afilliates, so they dont "dirt" my main domain, also I put in contract any spammer will be blocked, I think that will be a solution, but anyway Im scared that my site can be blocked without my knowledge. I ask for suggestions from the experienced resellers here, is there a company less restrictive about that, or another solution? Thanks Marcos

The only way out as I see it is to get your potential clients' agreement to receive emails, you can do that by collecting mail lists on your sites. Even if you start a new domain and get a hosting plan from a different provider, his IP will get banned.

Do you have it in the affiliate agreement that they are not allowed to spam your services? If not, you should. Then you actively research who's doing it, and remove them from the program. Don't look for a "way around it"...fix it instead.

I did that, but I wonder if I had a dedicated server I would be going through that. I believe is two or three afilliates that sended spam and I already block them.

Basically you have a domain that people are spamming (with their affiliate link at the end) You need to ask your host for more info,(if they haven't already given it to you) so you can get the affiliate link, and remove that affiliate from your service. Dedicated servers still do the same thing with spam, datacenters will disconnect your server if you recieve a complaint (some wait until 2 or 3 complaints)

In the end, if you or your affiliates are using spam as a means to advertise your website, you are responsible for it. If your affiliate doesn't listen to you, you should terminate their account/payments. That should stop them from spamming again (they have no more incentive). If they continue to do so in a malicious manner, then it wouldn't be your responsibility or problem. Tell your host (us in this case) that the spam was sent maliciously.. we would indicate the same to the complaining company/organisation Educating your affiliates, and warning them frequently about the consequences of spamming is a good idea. I believe such a practise would be followed by 99% of hosts, network providers, etc.. We deal with a large number of spam complaints each day, and it takes us a considerable amount of time to track/trace spammers and abusers. We need to be proactive to prevent our network from being blacklisted, but at the same time, we do actively communicate with customers regarding spam complaints. Please do continue communicating with us and I'm sure we can help you Last edited by Yash-JH; 01-06-2007 at 03:38 AM.

1. Work with your host, if they won't work with you then find a host that will. 2. Make sure your terms of service state spam is illegal and not tolerated. Suspend a couple accounts early to set an example that this is not tolerated. 3. Track down those spam complaints and make sure they really are spam. You have no idea how many customers we have that get reported as spammers by their customers when the customer is only receiving a order confirmation (I mean you ordered the product, you are going to want a confirmation your order was accepted, why flag it spam?? hello??!??!?). Your host should really work with you here. I bet some of those spam aren't spam. Jess

It certainly is spam, and we send to the user each time the full spam details(aka a forward of the munged mail), it is just the sheer quantity of complaints received over the last 6 months for this, I am glad to see it being taken seriously. We have sent many notices about spam for this domain, and many of them get repeated with a new affiliate ID. Maybe police the affiliate signup and require a moderation process on them will help you some to prevent the spam from being sent? I have spoken to you a number of times about this, and given you some replies as well. As I said I am glad you are taking it seriously, but the root of the problem is the number of complaints that have come in, some of them over and over. I think overall you will have the problem anywhere until the root issue is stopped which may take a little while to target and prevent.

Sounds like the problem isn't the host after all. Definitely time to start cancelling some affiliates and I would send an email to all your affiliates letting them know XXX number of affiliates were cancelled and will not be paid because of this. Jess
