move addon domain to new account
Posted by boxcar, 01-01-2007, 08:07 PM |
I recently changed from shared hosting to reseller account.
I had a bunch of addon domains in my shared hosting account - which is now my main account for my reseller account i.e. I had all my files transferred from old to new account as is.
Now I want to move the each addon domain to its own account on the reseller account. I wanted to check with you experts first to make sure I do everything in the right sequence.
So this is what I think I should do:
Create new account for domain1.com.
Create ftp settings for domain1
Upload all files for domain1.com to new space.
Create email addresses in new space
I don't need to change NS settings cause it is the same.
Delete old addon domain from main account.
Is this right?
Anything I left out?
Is there anything I missed or any problems I don't see?
I am concerned about downtime and possibility of lost email. Can anyone enlighten me whether this is a problem?
Any insight you can give me is greatly appreciated.
TIA,
BC

Sounds about right to me, probably the easiest way too. You really wouldn't have alot of downtime really you just need to change your dns or even add it as a third/fourth nameserver until they resolve.

You'll probably need to remove the domain as addon domain before of being able to create the new accounts for it.

If I have to delete old domain first, the site would be unavailable while I am setting up the new one, right?
This is cnfusing to me. Wha you say makes sense since one can't have the same domain in 2 locations without dns forwarding, I guess.
I don't know...this is all new to me.
Thanks for the replies.

WHM and it's DNS service will prevent you from creating another account with a domain that is already on the server. If you do want to keep up the site while you are transferring it, I would suggest creating a new account with a different domain (some random domain that doesn't actually exist on your server). Once you have it all setup, delete the addon domain, and edit the account through WHM and change the main domain for it to the actual domain. Although cPanel does not recommend changing the main domain, I have done it in the past and have not experienced any issues (at least ones that I could see), and this should result in minimal downtime.

How do you change the domain name?
Looking around WHM I don's see a place to do this.

All you need to do is click the edit tool next to the account's username in "list accounts," and there should be a textbox where the domain name is entered.

I don't have an edit tool next to the domain name, Just next to email , quote, and package.
Guess this option is out for me

It's actually next to "username," is it not available for you?
