You can start with 'Introduction to Linux'. After then study some basics like software setup and optimization.

Some may say I am wrong but if you have new server which you have to use for production. Better let management company run this for you.
There is plenty of companies that would manage your server for free as long as you get it from them.
Also, I would suggest you turn an VM on your local home PC and start read how-tos. Fix, Break, Fix Break...play with it...OS reload it...until you feel safe.
Good luck my friend.

I am agree with Nikolakidman , before any issue occurs you should look for server management organization that will take care of the things for you.
The service may include server monitoring too , which is again good.

Yes, that is correct if you know basic things in Linux, better keep your hands off the configuration things. You need some years of experience to get started to understand the server management on OS level.
You have the configurations from apache to sql, from the system level to actual disk optimization, etc. Many things to consider.

Hi guys,
I would never purchase an Unmanaged Server. Maybe a VPS because i know alot more about them. If there was ever a problem with your Dedicated Server and it was hosted e.g in Blue Square DataCenter in Maidenhead and you live in scotland lets say. I for one would not like to travel the length of the United Kingdom because a power lead has fallen out.
This is why you should always check to make sure it is 'managed' So they can do this for you.

Thnks for the tips . I have been hosting my sites for about 4 years and felt like its time for me to try something adventerous ..
but from the advices here , it looks like a risky try ..
I guess i will carry on with managed hosting for the time being ...

Well thats better option you have choosed , going for managed hosting is always the better decision. There are many other value added services in managed hosting option check for that too , just to get your server infrastructure secured.

If you are using a control panel like cPanel or Plesk, things will be easy for you as the days pass by. You can have server management companies or someone to secure/configure your server the way you need when required i.e. on tasks basis.
