Monitor a Linux system

Posted by DevMonkey, 02-13-2011, 04:54 PM
Is there some kind of script that can be used to log Linux (specifically CentOS) stats, such as memory being used, CPU being used, constantly and then perhaps present this either as a web page or even just to access in the console? Basically I want to see how a system is performing throughout the day for the next few days (not just when I'm available to check free memory, cpu usage etc) then perhaps present some graphs or something. Thanks!

Munin or Cacti... just to name two... Personally I run Munin and it has been good to me.

I agree with Munin and Cacti however Centreon+Nagios is good too

Thanks guys, I'm just looking at these now and they seem quite large scale things... for monitoring lots of servers etc. I wasn't really thinking of the likes of Cacti but I'ma have a look at the documentation anyway, so thanks

They are designed to scale well to large environments however there is no reason why you couldn't use it for a single server. For example - you can install Munin on a single server in WHM via the cPanel Addons section. Just because something scales well, doesn't mean you have to scale it

We run Munin, it's very easy to set up and while it is useful for large deployments it's very simple to set up for 1 server. Good tool for identifying the cause of crashes.

Zenoss or Zabbix or Monit http://status2k.com/ If you want to run it from Windows then Manage Engine Opmanager. Just a few suggestions.. I use Opmanager for my monitoring running on a Win2k8R2 box.

Cacti would be ideal. I know you want graphs and history but if you use phpsysinfo just to get basic current stats. Memory usage, mounts, uptime load etc http://sourceforge.net/dbimage.php?id=294405 http://phpsysinfo.sourceforge.net/
