How many sites on Shared Server?

| Howdy everybody...
Been lurking around tonight. I have been over here before and found a decent host after going though about 5 different hosts in the past. I am not a hosting reseller but I have a reseller account and webmaster several domains.
So this is my question...
I have 4Gigs of disk space and 60Gigs of Transfer on my account and I typically give each domain/site 50megs of space I can roughly host 80 accounts or something right?
Is it common to host that many sites on a shared server? I'm sure I'm not the only customer on that box. What if the next guy is hosting 50 domains on his account and perhaps another doing 30?
Is it actually possible to have that many sites on one Box?
As you can tell I'm a bit new to the hosting stuff I just do sites for the fun of it but my portfolio is growing... None of my sites get tons of traffic or anything... A few do have forums or other scripts installed that get used some here and there...
So how many sites can you actually cram on one server?

It all depends on the sites and the server.
If the sites are static HTML and the server has enough horse power it can host a few thousand with out ever having problems, where is a site like WHT takes 3 or 4 dual xeons just to host it alone.

| I'd say a dual xeon with 3 GB of ram could probably handle 100-200 medium sites comfortably. If you wanted to push with light use sites maybe 500. Course these are all variable numbers and sites won't all use the same amount of resources. Potentially you could cram a thousand sites but that's poor business sense as you have all your eggs in one basket and a small disaster could cost you everything.

That is interesting.. I'll have to research what the server specs are.. I am hosting 20 or so sites there now but add more all the time.. I still have almost 3 gigs of space left..
I suppose as long as none of the domains gets super busy or anything I won't have any problems. I just sort of worry about that sort of thing when I add 2 or 3 hosting packages in one day.. I'll think... Am I cramming this thing too full?

| Only your host can have an accurate answer to that. However, there shouldn't be a "too full" scenario if your host has thought out things carefully. If they gave you 4GB of space, they should be prepared to give you those 4GB of space if you need them.
Seing how the sites you host are pretty small, I doubt any of them will create a server load problem by itself, since the traffic they get is likely to be pretty small as well.

| That's the key right there. If the space and transfer are within limits, the things to monitor then are the CPU and the RAM.
Heck, I'll give you an example.
Someone signs up, and rents all of the space on your server for a reseller. He creates 50 accts which take up all of the space, but they're all static HTML sites. This will barely use any CPU unless traffic is forced upon it (such as Slashdot).
Now if 1 person rents all of your space, and gets slashdotted with even HTML (or even a popular forum), this could use a lot more CPU and RAM.
It's all on a case to case basis, really.

Seriously though, there really isn't some kind of secret combination. I take into consideration the amount of RAM, CPU & Disk Usage when adding new accounts to the server. Once upon a time I had believed that no shared server could ever push more than 350 gigabytes of bandwidth a month doing normal web traffic. I proved myself wrong there, with some servers doing over 500. In the end though, I think you'd be surprised at how many sites a server can actually hold without too many detrimental effects to stability and speed.
