Cpanel & user passwords
Posted by WebsterD, 05-02-2005, 11:46 AM |
I'm looking for a way for Cpanel mail users to manage their own passwords. This is one of those most basic of things that cause me to look at different control panels. How much of a risk can this be?
Some Cpanel hosts provide a custom form for mail user control. Hats off to those hosts. Can anybody suggest a script that takes the password monkey off administrators' backs?
An extra .02 cents: Although I'm not their biggest fan, Ensim is friendliest to mail and ftp users with its self-serve user panel. Plesk's controls take care of this with even more finesse. DirectAdmin allows user control over passwords. H-Sphere too. I can't speak for other control panels but you get my idea.
Will Cpanel ever catch up?

WHM has an option under tweak settings to Allow cPanel users to reset their password via email. Would that do what you are looking for ?

Also, whomever is the admin for the domain name can manage all user passwords for addon mailboxes.
Cpanel>>Mail>>Manage/Add/Remove Accounts>>Change Pass
We no longer allow the passwords to be emailed. We once had a user on a library computer and then forgot to log out and delete the email from that public machine. Someone went in and wiped out that users data after they left. We had to restore from backup and decided it is best for them to contact us for the passwords from that point on.

Yes, this would definitely help! I don't know about this tweak. I don't see it in my current WHM and don't remember it from panels in the past. Nor a regular CP screen. Is it something on the server admin side or that needs to be enabled?
Thanks for the info!

It has been in whm for as long as I can remember, however you do need root whm login to access it. From there it's:
Server Setup -> Tweak Settings -> System -> Allow cPanel users to reset their password via email

That's what I thought... I'm accustomed to WHM only at reseller level. Another reason to take it up a notch to VPS, or choose a more advanced reseller/site panel.

You could, realistically, have a script written to do this. I have been thinking about something similar for giving out to our resellers... basically the way it would work is the user would go in, type their email and password, and it would verify it, then it would ask the a 'security question', 'security answer', and an 'alternative mailbox'. Then if they lose their password, they go to the form, put in their email address, answer the security question, and it is reset and emailed to the previously stored off-site address.
I think it sounds like a rather neat idea, no?

I like your idea, definitely. Extra authentication doesn't hurt either. My first Cpanel host 5 or 6 years ago had a form installed in its web mail URL for changing POP passwords. Don't know how secure it was but it worked over https. It did the job. When I moved on to different hosts is when I realized this wasn't a Cpanel feature.

Yeah, it's a shame they don't have something built in for it, but then, it is quite a bit of extra effort. I would rather they spend time fixing bugs than adding features personally
