Buying a Server, Name Server Questions
Posted by HostSkies, 10-08-2010, 12:08 PM |
Ill be buying numerous servers, such as serv1.website.com serv2.website.com serv3.website.com
all of these servers will have independent cpanels while connecting through remote connection on whm and distributing clients via whmcs.
I need to have all of these servers have the nameservers ns1.website.com and ns2.website.com , and have all of these servers and more using these two name servers.
Would i use cpanel dns only?
Therefore clients could just add ns1.website.com and ns2.website.com to their dns records regardless of which server they are on

i think you will need a set of name servers for each servers. If you are trying to keep the other servers as backup servers if for to avoid down times, by changing name server ip's to secondary server's then your request can be implemented.

Yes you can use cPanel DNS only for the dedicated DNS servers. A fully licensed cPanel would also work, but since you hopefully are only running DNS on it there is no reason to pay for a lic if you don't have to.

okay so your suggestion is to run 2 independent servers , min.
1+ servers for cpanel and clients
and 1 or 2 servers for name services (dns only)

Well you should absolutely use cPanel DNSonly for this purpose and should run them on servers (may be VPS) located far away in different regions on different networks.
If planned properly you can use them as backup MX also.

okay so let me just recap,
I get vps from different areas around the world, ie, one in america, one in canada (which i can host, however i have a really slow connection so ill see about getting a 100mbps connect to my house). and one in the uk. then have 3 name servers, ns1 ns2 ns3, all of these name servers running cpanel dnsonly, and cpanel dnsonly is free correct if you have 1 license of cpanel, or do you have to buy a license for dnsonly. From there i would have all of the nameservers connecting to my web servers using dnsonly.
Is this correct , and all of my servers, whether it be a nameserver or a webserver have to be running dnsonly. correct me if im wrong.
Thanks a bunch

Just to make it clear,
1) cPanel DNSonly is a free product, you can use it on as many servers/VPS as you want, it is not tied to any full cPanel license, that means whether you have a full cPanel server or not still you can use it (though it is meant to work with cPanel servers).
2) You do not need to have a 100Mbps type of connection to manage your remote servers, whether they are DNSonly or full servers.
3) Two DNSonly are good enough, more does not hurt.
4) You can use the same DNSonly for all your full cPanel servers. That means if you are planning three DNSonly, you can use same NS1, NS2, NS3 on all your servers.
5) You can also use them as backup MX (backup mail server), just incase your main server goes down, or there is routing problem between the sending MTA and your main server, your backup MX will kick in to receive emails and deliver them to main server.

in simple terms, i need
X amount of web servers set to ns1. and ns2.
2 or more dns servers using dns only
1 mail server
I can then set the dns servers to be fallovers of the 1 or more mail servers.
Is there, any way for now, to have the mail server located on the web server, like either with a vm or something of a sort?

First check out how cPanel servers work.
Going through standard practice, people run all the services web, mail, database DNS etc on a single server.
Here what you want to achieve is, running web, mail and database on your full cPanel servers, DNS + backup MX on separate servers/VPS.
So lets say you have 3 main servers running full cPanel, you can then have 2 or more DNSonly servers/VPS, one or more of those DNSonly servers can act as backup MX also.
Note that backupMX is not serving directly to your clients, clients do not connect to them to send/receive emails. BackupMX just collect email when your main server is down and deliver those emails to the main server when its online again. BackupMX is not failover full email server.

okay how i go about executing the task of setting up the dns servers as mx backups as well

DNS zone should contain the entry for secondary MX.
On the DNSonly server, domain should be listed at /etc/secondarymx
Exim should be running on DNSonly too.

okay, i think this is the last question
http://www.switchlink.co.uk/virtual-...e-servers.html
what one do i choose and will this work for a uk based name server, this will be ns2. the one in us will be ns1

Where will be your most of the clients located, decide on that basis.
If you are planning to have just two DNSonly VPS and most of your clients are going to be from USA/Canada region better keep both DNS there only, one in Canada and one in USA.
A 256 Mb VPS is good enough for simple DNSonly, for the NS+MX you should go for a bit higher specs.

You may set up a dns cluster such that all your servers use a common dns.
See http://docs.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/vie...nfigureCluster
However I would suggest to make things simple by adding a set of dns to each server.
That is ns1/ns.website.com for server1, ns3/ns3.website.com for server2 etc

Create nameserver records in DNS after that create chiled name server, Assign ip address for DNS record

okay so can you list what i all need server and software wise?
|
Posted by HostSkies, 10-09-2010, 03:07 PM |
so basically i need web servers,
with around 2 or three dns, if im going to go with having the backups of mail on one of those dns servers, i will have to get a vps with a bit higher specs for that. okay
i got a bit confused when you said ns and mx as well as dns, but i understand now that they are the same thing, im just a little worried and want to do exactly right
Thanks
