H-sphere Resellers AND Fantastico AND Pre-Installed Scripts

Posted by autonomous, 02-26-2005, 03:17 AM
I'm currently looking at H-sphere resellers such as DIYHosting and JodoHost so that I have the option of both Linux and Windows under my reseller account - Before I decided that I wanted that abillity I had been interested in Hostingzoom and Hostgator... they offer the Fantastico script installer which sounded pretty great... How valuable is Fantastico ? If I'm with an H-sphere reseller can I still install the same scripts myself ? Would I have to install the scripts for each of my customers or would I do it on my main account only ? These are pre-sales questions I will be asking to the H-sphere resellers but was wondering if anyone has had experience with installing these scripts and if it's that big of a deal that they don't have something like Fantastico included in their plans? Below is Fantastico description from the Hostgator site: _______________________________________ Fantastico DeLuxe will allow you and your customers to install all of the below scripts instantly. To use fantastico you or your client will just login to their control panel click fantastico, and then click one of the 36 scripts to be installed. Fantastico only works under CPanel, and thus it won't work on HSphere reseller account.

Regardless of what anyone tells you - and regardless of how convenient things like fantastico are - you really want to avoid using auto-installers if possible. Even under idea situations, several apps never quite function properly if installed via an auto-installer. Additionally - NO HOST keeps all versions of the applications in the Auto-Installer updated properly - ultimately resulting in many unsecure applications residing in the environment, with many more points of vulnerability. This is only made worse by the fact that customers - who have access to autoinstallers - will install everything available - just to have them - however, considering how dated the applications can be - this now represents a VERY large security issue.. Best example, and the most obvious to point out from the list above is: phpBB2 (2.0.8c) There was a massive vulnerability affecting versions of phpBB 2.0.10 and earlier http://lwn.net/Articles/116678/ However, all these fantastico installs are still installing older versions - for those of you that recall - 1000's of sites were defaced. Having said all this, H-Sphere does possess auto-installers for phpBB and osCommerce - Again, I strongly advise you take the few minutes and install the applications manually - or, at the very least - check with the host and ensure that their versions of the applications in their autoload are up to date and current. How valuable is Fantastico ? A) It depends on your experience installing scripts. It is kind of a mixed bag, if you have an auto installer or install a script for a customer at what point does your support for that script stop? If it is defaced like in the case of phpBB2 are you going to fix thousands of installs? I always prefer the method of trying to educate our customers, in the long run they are usually happier. Also determine how often most would need a script installed. If I'm with an H-sphere reseller can I still install the same scripts myself ? A) Yes Would I have to install the scripts for each of my customers or would I do it on my main account only ? A) Currently you would have to install those scripts for each customer. What we do is have a local copy of many scripts and when we receive a request, modify the config file and upload it. The other option is show your customer how to install themselves. Most if the scripts mentioned need some customization post install anyhow, graphics, headers ect.
