System folder/file permissions?

Posted by Eli L, 08-27-2010, 07:07 PM
What should the permissions of system folders and files be (etc, usr, var, sbin, tmp....)? If I use a php shell I can change dirs into the root of my server and browse system folders and files that were created with insecure permissions. Seems like a big security risk. How do I prevent this and what permissions should the folders and files be? I have a CentOS cpanel server. Thanks

On a cPanel server, default permission for directories is 755. You should be setting restrictions on the server in running php shells or scripts. Only specific privileged users should be given permission for running and executing php scripts.

tmp depends on the log rotate, If you change, The if you go on the WHM firewall it will tell you to change the permission to 1777. cPanel also recommend 1777 Basicly the 1 means you must be the owner and the 777 is read write.
