Client signup's Question?
Posted by Companyideas, 01-09-2005, 03:40 PM |
Hi,
Been looking through your wonderful site for the past couple of days. I am currently in the process of investigation and planning for my own hosting company, and the resources here are very helpful.
My initial plan is to offer a 200Mb Hosting plan with 2.6Gb Bandwidth for a small setup fee and £0.99 monthly fee, this is aimed at a certain marketplace who should find the price about right.
I have a question, which people maybe able to assist with:
Based on our own experience, for a startup reseller what is a "typical" sign up rate of clients per month?
Also, what's peoples advice on marketing?
Thanks in advance and look forward to hearing your views.
Regards
David

Hi David,
If you're looking to acquire a reseller account and begin offering hosting - may I recommend you pre-determine what you certain value will be to the consumer.
ie) Design, Application, Support, etc...
If you're just looking to sell hosting space based on price alone, you cold be in for a long haul.
Consider doing some research in your local market and determining if there are any requirements (amongst your networks and elsewhere) that you could position yourself to meet.
ie) Graphic Design, Content Management, CRM, eCommerce, Also, take a look at niche markets in your area and see if any are untapped - ie) realtors, auto dealerships, dentists - whatever - and see if you can find a solution that will meet their certain requirements.
If you can identify a targt audience and can present them with a viable solution - you will experience a much higher degree of success reselling web hosting space.
Finally - if you follow the path outlined above - make sure you choose a reliable provider - space and badwith really wont be as important - as you are selling a solution - and probably for a premium - therefore, make sure you have a provider you can rely on.
Hope this helps...

Thanks for your reply.
I have identified a marketplace in the UK which is somewhat under supplied. The users in this market place currently use no hosting or at best free hosting services with very limited support and functionality. These are all areas which my solution will address.
Also, the hosting site will only be a small section of my overall solution.
Maybe I did not make that clear in the original post (sorry).
The question was aimed really at trying to put some client sign up figures in my business plan (I would like the hosting side to at least break even after 3 or 4 months, without pulling resources and profits from the other side of the business) and didn't want to put in unrealistic figures.
Thanks again.

Hi David - Very refreshng to have a poster who has thought all this through
I think that signup target is reasonable with aggressive local marketing based upon your assessment of your market.
Results from internet marketing and internet based sales take a little longer (generally) to occur.
If I remember correctly - it really took 12-18 months for our internet sales to pick up - howver, our local sales started immediately. This may not be true for everyone - but, this is what we experienced.
Hope this helps..
