Need help finding a GOOD reseller host

Posted by sledgeweb, 12-03-2004, 05:54 PM
I'm currently on milescape, and they've just had their second major crash in four months. I've been with them for two years, and their pricing is great, and when thing are going smoothly, it is great - but every few months their is a MAJOR catastrophe resulting in unrecoverable loss of data. I just did the quote thing, but here's what I'm looking for (please, suggestions?!?) I need to get up and running quickly (milescape is still down, and they take forever to recover when they are down). I'm losing money every minute my email and web sites are down. I need the ability to host unlimited domains (duh, reseller). I'd like to not have to pay extra for each domain. Unlimited emails. RELIABLE up time, with some kind host provided off server back up. Unlimited mysql. About 1-3 gigs 50-100 GB xfer / month Linux... php Cpanel/WHM Fantastico would be nice About $20/month or so Fast speed FTP, SSH, etc. Basically, I'm looking for something comparable to what I have now, but much more reliable than milescape.

Why dont u have a look in the offers forum, many hosts offer free trails ! So u cant test drive their accounts

Because, I want to find a good host and stick with it. I don't want to be switching host every month for a year. If I'm just going to go out and randomly try a new host every month, why does a forum like this even exist? Don't mean to be mean, I'm just in a bad mood - all my sites (and my clients sites) have been down for 24 hours and I'm losing a bunch of money as we speak. So... I don't want to be playing games and guessing at a good host and trying it for a while and then going to something else. I'm trying to find a reliable host that fits my needs so I don't have to go through this whole moving mess again. This is the second time I've had to move due to poor hosting, first was with Tera-Byte and now Milescape. There are SO MANY in the offers forum, I wouldn't have any idea who is good and who isn't - I'd just be picking by dumb luck, and that is how I got into the trouble I'm in now. I'm try to get some recommendations based on user experience from a reliable host.

sledgeweb, Best thing to do is get a nice list of resellers together that meets your needs. Then send an email to their sales and support departments with all your questions and keep track of response times. Ask for uptime reports to see how reliable they are.

The problem with that, is, that anybody can look good on paper. Milescape LOOKS great. And they really do have like 99.9% up time. But, that .1% time when they are down, it is a hard crash that results in a lot of data loss. That is the kind of info you can only get from user experience.

Look for feedback from their customers http://www.webhostingtalk.com/search.php?s= Contact the customers even and enquire about their uptime experience. Ask the host for uptime reports for their servers. I will add that finding SSH might prove to be a problem and $20 for 100GB might translate into problems sooner or later.

Hi! I, too, am considering this...I've been on 'net for a long, long time. I agree with you completely about the moving around..major pain. I like the free trials even more than most..but I doubt I'll offer one myself. I selected thrree hosts out of a pool of over a hundred this morning. Needless to say..it was not easy. Most of it was a gut feeling...exchange a couple of emails with the host in question...see how fast they respond...see if they really answer your questions or seem to be terribly scripted like so much of the nosupport people I've had to deal with in India. Eeeeeediots! Sorry..a "hacker" really has nothing to do with "spam"...sad *AND* demented. Feh. I have found it quite useful to sign up for a bunch of different accounts and try them all out. Domains are no prob...go to godaddy and pick out ~10 like I did...*.info@$1.95 each. These domains really resolve fast..in fact...it took less than two hours today for them to resolve to major host#1 using both Earthlink and AOL. Yes...I have two ISP's. Access is just too important to me...esp right now...I think the most important thing to consider is this: Is this company/web host going to be there next week/month/year. I will be. I can't see a real host providing that much space and SSL for $20.00/month. SSH is a serious security risk..and on most of the "turnkey" cPanel websites..it's not going to be there. Fantasico rocks..that's what finally got me into this. Do web searches with google. I did a ton of them yesterday and today..search for specifics...feature combos you want. Good luck. Bryon

With the situation your are in, sledgeweb, I would suggest the following to shortlist any potential Hosters and increase your odds of gettng a good one. Increase your Budget or decrease your expections. - a good Hoster cannot provide what you ask at the price you desire, as you have learned A good Rule-of-Thumb is never go below paying 50 cents per GB of Data transfer. - it prices money to have good equipment and Servers not overloaded Never use a Hoster that offers 'unlimited' anything -- except maybe Support. - all resources & services on a Server are limited and 'unlimited' is just a gimmick to get people to buy You're going to have very busy weekend and not sure how you'll handle transferring your accounts, but the above guidelines should direct you more quickly, to a Hoster that you can do good business with.

All these are great comments...But Find a host that backs up your data so that you are not worried about that aspect. Alot of hosts can provide +99% but what good is it if your data is lost?

Well done Dan for posting something of worth in a thread that needed it. 100gb transfer for $20/mo is not going to buy you a "GOOD" host.
