starting up business, have questions
Posted by holstead, 12-03-2004, 05:24 PM |
I just started up an website development company and already have 10 clients...I current have a (shared) reseller plan with wwm.net and for the price they are awesome. Question are long, so my appreciation will extend to anyone who can give me some insight on any of the following:
1.) As my business grows, I will need to upgrade my reseller account and eventually either buy more reseller accounts or get a dedicated server or VPN...when is a good time to know you have to make this switch? How would I know if I needed a dedicated or VPN?
2.) With your typical LAMP setup, SSL support, streaming video/audio, etc...whats a typical monthly price for a dedicated server and how much does bandwith typically cost?
3.) What kind of control would I have over your typical dedicated or VPN server? Could I remotely install software like Darwin for streaming .movs?
4.) (sorta off topic) I have alot of login/password and contact information regarding all these domains, registrars, etc.... Since these logins are sensitive information...whats a nice secure way to store this information on your computer? Or, what do you use to keep organized and preparred? (windows xp or OSX 10.x)

i am also interessted in hearing what people use for keeping passwords and sensitive information save and organized... i am almost thinking about storing that stuff on an offline computer .. and as far as i remember there are quite a few programms out there for that matter... cant remember any names, but i am sure on cnet or hotscripts u could find them... i think i have one bookmarked, if i find it i post here ..

When the price you pay for the 'many' reseller accounts, reaches the one for the dedicated server
This is the answer if the money are issue.
Know that there is no such thing like 100% security.
Always use FireWall, always use AntiVirus software.
It would be best if you can remember all of the passwords - not to store them on your PC, or to write them anywhere.
If you store your passwords on your PC - encrypt your files that contain the passwords.
Another way is to have one a PC that is always off-line and store the passwords there.

or if you can't do that use a sheet of paper.

Hi!
Passwords? Ack. No comment. Web hosts basics. I'll tell you how I picked three today out of about a hundred.
Dedicated is swell..but...I'm sorry. I'm not signing up for $150-$200/month outlay without having customer #1. Nope. Not prudent. Ok..that said...look for these host warning signs:
1. They have a phone and never answer it. Another turnoff: they do answer it...and you wished they had not. That happened too.
2. Chat support icons with "online" when they are not. You'll find this a lot. Sorry...see ya.
3. Idiot non-geeks talking about things and tech they have no basic understanding. Sorry..no..hyperthreading does not instantly turn a dual proc 2.4Gz server into a 9.4Ghz 4 processor machine.
4. Here's another biggie: They talk about having a 300Terabyte connection to the POP (Point of Presence) via 300 backbones and somehow fail to mention what the actual server is hooked to. You'd be real surprised..10MBs non-reduntant LAN sometimes. Be afraid. Be very afraid. Oh. One IDE drive and one LAN card. Ops...didn't mention that either.
5. Unlimited space..unlimited bandwidth. This one is an oldie but still around...sadly. Sorry. I have to pay for space. I pay for bandwidth. If I plan on being in business next week, month, year..
my customers are going to pay for space and bandwidth too.
6. Yearly plans. Oh...here's a dilly. Web hosting company that hasn't even been in business for a month wanting *YOU* to pay for a year in advance. No way.
7. Scary downstream hosts. You'll see a lot of these. A host>reseller1>reseller2>reseller3 selling you a reseller account.
It's easy to spot these. In many cases, they are too cheap to have private nameservers...so you can lookup an IP and see who really owns it and learn all you need to know about who is reselling who.
Good luck.
