Does a reseller account allow "successful" sites?

Posted by MagicM, 11-10-2004, 06:44 PM
I have a couple of sites (nuke+phpbb2 based) that have between 50-250 users online (in the same moment) with about 35000 daily pageviews, sometimes even more (average is about 100 - with 15k pw a day). Since I see a lot of server admins over here, I wonder if sites like this are tolerated or I should definitely go for a dedicated server (even if I'm not a sysadmin )? Thanks in advance

No reason why not, you'd need to go with someone who understands your requirement, you're average $10 reseller account will probably not be up to the job, but a reseller account on a lightly populated fast server would be OK. The thing to think about is the future, will you grow your user community ? If so, then it might pay to get a half decent dedicated and a server admin and then grow into it.

I don't know the server hardware or how long and how often there are 250 users on your forum but that would seem to place a big burden on the server unless the server was pretty beefy. If your reseller account is managing the traffic fine and your host is not complaining I suppose it's fine. I personally would place it on a dedicated server or at least a VPS.

Well, your sites are using a lot of resources which will most likely create problems for you with any shared reseller account you have. Avoid the hassles and get a VPS or dedicated server.

I agree if your sites have a lot of traffic you will find that your reseller hosting will ask you to move to a vps or a dedicated server. Might as well start off with what you need instead of moving your sites again.

Large reseller package or VPS server should get you all set. If you need more migrate to a full blown dedicated server.

Well as everyone else here has already said, it may be a better option to move to a dedicated or VPS. Surely with the level of traffic your site is receiving you should easily be able to obtain some form of funding from your site to accommodate a dedicated or VPS; at least this will allow for further expansion of your site and its services. Most resellers will ask you to move to a dedicated or VPS solutions should they see your services are affecting services of other users on the server. This is usually a good sign that you have outgrown your current hosting limits.

Thanks everybody! The problem is that I can't afford to pay a server admin and I'm not able to manage the server myself, just can use cpanel and WHM. Which are the main "duties" for someone who goes for a dedicated solution? It would take much time to learn how to manage it? Any suggestion is very appreciated

A managed VPS really sounds like you best solution.

You can also, look for a semi dedicated account. That guarantee's that the server won't be overloaded with other resellers so you may use more resources.

So basically he should get a VPS solution because he gets heavy traffic. Should I do the same thing then? I have an entertainment website that gets 10.000 visits a day for about 100GB BW monthly (mainly html pages and some zip files). So is a reseller account with about 150-200GB a month enough to handle the traffic or should I also get a VPS solution? The host I'm currently with doesn't seem to mind and the site works great (no slowdown whatsoever) so I'm wondering whether or not I should go from a reseller account to a VPS solution.

I'm thinking about a managed VPS with Dinix or someone else, this will allow me to learn something b4 I go for a dedicated (Hostdime?), does it sound a good solution? Any suggestions? Thanks

Make sure that managed means completely managed. Each provider tends to have its own definition of what managed means.

A large Reseller Account/ VPS . There are lots of reputed hosts in the forum. Just search

With the amount of active site visitors I would definitely recommend a dedicated server. There are plenty of hosting companies that would provide the services you need without having to hire a dedicated network operations tech. Regards

If you were to get a VPS, you would generally be able to bump the amount of RAM and storage available to you without much hassle. This is nice for sites which are growing, or if you purchased a package that was underpowered.

Thanks, do you think a VPS account with Minimum Guaranteed CPU 150 Mhz+ & 4 GB Maximum RAM could handle the work? Thx

I would go with dinix. I can attest that their support is great and their VPS plans are reliable. They offer a good level of management for someone just starting out. Any cpanel problems, email, database, they will support you with. The hard part if you don't know what your doing will be getting yourself setup after that (not that hard really just foreign if you haven't done it before). After you get running you should be fine. Any problems along the way you will have dinix.com's support as your safety net. With most responses received in 15 minutes or less you can't go wrong. Note: They really go by what you mark as your support tickets level of priority. If you have serious issues don't be afraid to mark urgent and if you mark it low priority it will be handled as such. Good Luck.

I'm currently looking for a reliable reseller account for multiple domains of my own and expected high traffic, what you say about your host sounds great, could you please provide a URL for them? Thanks.

I would personally go for a dedicated server good enough to handle all of the work. That way, instead of migrating to a dedicated when your communities expand you can grow into the server. Either way reseller account probably wouldn't be the smartest choice.

I agree Tekerz, but Dinix still doesn't have available accounts, every VPS plan is sold out since weeks (or months)
