DNS issues

Posted by vip2, 03-04-2010, 10:35 AM
Don't know what on earth has happened but been suffering from a downtime due to a DNS issue of some kind. As none of my domains which are hosted on a cPanel server are resolving. Running a check through some DNS sites and I get and Nothing has been modified for ages and the only thing I can think of is a possible cPanel update to 11.25. The begining of my named.conf is like such Any 1 got any ideas on what I can go now as I've checked and triple checked the settings and they're all the same from when it was working fine.

Is there actually a line in there for your domain as that config just seems to show a very standard template

Do you have the domain entries in the /etc/named.conf file OR just the entries you have shown above? Also any error message you receive while restarting the named service?

Yes there is Next line is for example something like this zone "wh0a.com" { type master; file "/var/named/wh0a.com.db"; }; No errors when restarting named and I have used named-checkconf to make sure there are no syntax errors.

Do you have any firewall installed on the server.

Don't see any problems with the iptable rules as well. Have your hosting company OR a server management company to look into the server? BTW, are you sure all the websites have stopped working from all the locations?

Well basically all the websites via domain had stopped working on some connections. I would say 80% of users and account owners were affected. Including myself. Yet if I used a proxy or my work connection it was fine. Considering that I've just ripped to shreds all the configuration files to do with names servers / dns to try and rectify this issue. I decided to go back to my registrar of which I have the nameservers registered with. Done a DNS RESET to their defaults and just configured everything back up nameserver wise. My registrar is 123-REG and initially a long time ago when this server was setup I think I followed one of these 123-Reg Nameserver guides on getting private nameservers. Now apart from doing that, I've also gone into the DNS Management option within 123-REG and set two A records with my nameservers in there. Seems to have sorted it. As I can access the domains hosted on the server and not being forced to use IP addresses. Phewwww.. Wish I had done that yesterday when I was pullin my hair out.

Hmm, odd situation. Were the nameserver records returned by the parent servers showing the correct IPs?

I wonder if /scripts/fixbuggynamed or /scripts/rebuildnamedconf would have helped at all? Hmm...
