Looking for a new host...

Posted by frobnitz, 06-18-2004, 07:37 PM
Hi... I'm a happy user at Dixiesys, but lately I've run into problems with mailing list support. The way majordomo is configured it causes problems for some of my users who need to send attachments around due to size limits on mail. The number of people in these lists is about a dozen, and the attachment sizes aren't very long, but it's getting in the way of discussions and causing me to have to find other ways of shipping the info around. So, I'm looking for a new host. Here's my requirements and hopefully you folks could guide me to good solution. 1) Good email list capability - mailman seems like it has the right functionality, but I don't want to run into the same limit problems that I have at dixiesys. 2) IMAP support, and the ability to have server mailboxes grow to the size limit of the storage allocated on the server. 3) Ability to support something like 5 domains - I have a reseller acct now, but I don't resell service - I just want to support multiple domains with different content in them. 4) Ability to control records in the DNS manually, not just automatically. 5) Reasonable storage, >800 MB, and good connectivity to AT&T's backbone (most access is via cablemodem). 6) Frontpage publishing extensions 7) Good email support, phone support a plus. 8) Reasonable pricing. 9) No adult content hosted on the servers that I would be allocated on. Thanks, Frob

Welcome to WHT! Your best bet will be to use the Host Quote feature of WHT to find a host suitable to you. Good luck!

I'm sure there are plenty of hosts that meet your requirements. I'm sure you'll get a few recommendations but until then, try the HostQuote: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/request.php

May I ask why? Don't get me wrong, it's fine by me, I just want to know the reason in your case. Thanks.

I wouldn't want to be hosted on a server either where adult content is allowed. My reason is that these servers are more often subject to spikes of heavy traffic and probably hack attempts too.

Yeah, that's about the best reason right there. Adult servers get a ton more attempted hacks than non.

Wolfstream is right, plus the fact these sites often end up on spam or content blocking lists, where the whole IP is banned, and that would affect my site as well. Why anyone who isn't serving adult content would want to be on a hoster that allows it is beyond me. Thanks, Mike

As for mailing lists, you clearly want to get a host with Mailman. I've in private and professionally managed both Majordomo and Mailman lsits, and since a couple of years Mailman has clearly become superios to Majordomo. It's easier to manage and does about everything one can dream of. All Plesk and cPanel interfaces come bundled with Mailman.
