Hi, I am new to this communty and have some questions. I want to take a reseller / shared plan with abt 20gb/30gb of bandwidth for abt 6 sites. SO what do yyou recommend a reseller / shared ? Also go to ebay.com and search for webhosting reseller you will ee tons of people for 5gb/50gb and so on for 7-8usd too cheap so do you suggest trying them ? well whatever but i want my site to be 99.99% uptime ATLEAST!!! and yes most important we have to mail our companys clients frequently so there should be no complains for that. Thanks

If you plan on reselling space in exchange for anything - you are required per the host's AUP/TOS to get a reseller account. It doesn't matter if you only need the 500MB/5GB space from the shared, if you plan on reselling it - you must get a reseller account. That is the way the world tumbles.

No. Not reselling. All the 5-6 sites will be of our company so its not of the public!!! So what shall i take ? Also, if you could please see my ste filmcity . uni . cc , will it be benficial to offer people hosting here ? dont think anybody will. ?

Hello, If all are your company websites than go for a shared hosting account instead of a reseller. A host in most cases will not provide any support to reseller-endusers. Regards,

Napa, I would suggest that you go with a reseller account for the following reasons: 1 - Control. With a reseller account you can add, subtract, and manage domains you own at will. 2 - prices. A shared hosting plan with the features you are looking for would cost easily twice as much as the equivalent reseller plan. Most likely anyone you are considering getting a shared account from is a reseller of some sort. 3 - Expandability. Working as a reseller you can upgrade to a larger account more easily than if you were on a shared host. 4 - Reputation. By getting a reseller account now, you are beginning to establish your company in the hosting community, even if you are not "selling" space on your account. You will learn valuable lessons in choosing server/software/data center configurations that can only help you when you are ready to expand your business into a host in the future. Ok. Thats my 2 cents worth. All items above are my own opinion and have no backing/basis in reality whatsoever so take them as such.

No I wouldn't recommend going with an ebay company. Although you could try it out at your own risk. I would recommend that you get a reseller plan, partly for the reasons KaiserSoze listed, but also with CPanel Resellers you get a different control panel for each domain, but with a Shared Account you get only one for all your domains. Also, you can always try sending mail via your ISP.

I'd stay away from ebay for web hosting. In most cases you need to be extra careful when buying hosting over ebay. You can request a quote here at the forum and then compare.

OK. Thanks everybody.. So, suppose 1 file of 7mb 200people per day download it, so it will take 1.4GB/day , ya ? OK then even 20gb of bandwidth would do BUTTTT i need an upgrade option as well as support for downloadable files and streaming media!! As i said i wont resell a the moment (will surely try though) so our company has presentation which will be downloaded by crores of people worldwide. also that presentation will be also available for online viewing SO streaming media and downloadable thing shall be allowed. i believe host companies would normally permit it because first we have the copyrights and secondly if its within our bandwidth limit why would they object ? as KaiserSoze said, I agree. I have learnt a lot by seeing WHM demo so i was interested from WHM from very beginning.. What do you guys tghink abt that mass mailing ? see its NOT spam because its our clients.. we dont prefer to send via ISP because we want to allow mails via we@ourdomain.com and so our ISP wont allow relaying.. fusionrays, i agree creating via WHM will give diff control panels. Abt EBay companies, intergrityhost or something like that was good by their price and by their feedback they got but their TOS is very long.. forget it. any other hosts you guys recommend ? BTW, suppose whenever we transfer our site how can we ensure that nameserver changes go on and the site is NOT down for even a minute ? i have seen sites like webwizguide.info transferring even though they were up at that moment, how ? Again, Many Thanks everybody for your help.

Your current nameservers for the website point to a server where the DNS records for your website are stored. It is possible to set these records to point to your new host. So you transfer the files to your new host, then you change the DNS records at your current host. This way your website will run off the new server. Then you change the nameservers at your registrar. This way your website is already running from the new host even before DNS propogation due to the nameservers occurs.

99.99 % uptime is less than one hour of downtime per year. Good Luck.

Exactly, most people who offer that can't keep up with that.

Bandwidth: Some reseller accounts "throttle" bandwidth, and when you reach your allotment, your site is unavailable. That will be totally unacceptable if you are relying on your site for generation of revenue. Some other reseller accounts simply charge you a fee for bandwidth over your allotment in the $5 per GB range ... a better option for you, I would think. So ask about that. I'm very happy with my reseller plan, but I think they throttle the bandwidth and you can't exceed it. You have to upgrade plans or wait until the end of the month to get your site back up. emails: This could be a bigger problem than you think. Make sure you discuss with your host that you have an email list of customers, and will be sending a newsletter to them. Some companies don't invite this at all, and will suspend your account if you get the server you are on listed at any of the SPAM listing services. (On a reseller account, you are sharing the server with many other customers, and if one sends out spam, chances are your emails to your customers can get filtered out by the spam filters out there). Based on the two requirements above, I think you should consider a VPS or dedicated server and pay for full management of it. Consider that a dedicated server at EV1Servers.net or ServerMatrix.com can provide 700gb of bandwidth and 40GB of disk space for $100 - $150 per month (with Control Panel software). Hire someone like AcuNett.com to do an initial setup (about $75 to $100 one time) and then get their monthly service ($35) to keep the server up and running. A VPS gives you much the same format, but with less resources. Tektonic.com has a VPS with a control panel (DirectAdmin) that would give you 150GB of data transfer and 6GB of disk space for $50 a month (remember that the net disk space is ~1GB less because of the OS install). Each extra GB of data transfer is $2, and you can add 3GB of disk space for an extra $5 a month. You can do most anything you want, that's legal, with either a dedicated server or VPS. If you decide to go the reseller route, on a shared server, write out a list of your requirements and make sure you discuss each item with the proposed host. You may find that someone who would not have qualms about you sending out bulk email already is listed on the SPAM blacklist services.

How soon do you plan on expanding?

Posted by blue27, 03-23-2004, 04:46 PM
If you want 99.99% uptime, 30gb transfer, expect to pay $50-$60/month. I have never seen a reliable or reputable host sell space on Ebay.

A reseller account would suit your needs better but on the other hand it would be more expensive. Fill in a host quote and see what you get back

Posted by Napa, 03-27-2004, 12:17 PM
Hi, Thanks everybody for your replies. Why shall i pay 50/60usd/month for 30gb bw ? if its above 20usd/month, why not buy a dedicated server at servermatrix ?
