NAS for SMB
Posted by andretenreiro, 11-29-2009, 09:01 AM |
I'm looking for a NAS solution to our business. We have several services (web, email, svn repository, etc) running in 3 different Ubuntu/Win2008 PowerEdge Servers.
Our currently backup solution is Tape, which I personally dislike it and and an external USB Disk.
I found several solutions such as Iomega's NAS, FreeNAS (requires to buy hardware) and OpenFiler. I would be nice if the NAS has support for NFS, SMB and rsync.
Let's say our budget is at the most 500 USD / 350 EUR (without taxes).
What do you recommend?
PS: Does Dell sell NAS?

I would recommend using DRBD with Linux HA. I've used this in a NAS setup, had two machines with one having 10.1.0.10 and the other 10.1.0.12, the virtual ip was 10.1.0.11. When node1 went down HA flipped to node two. Worked great.

Synology DS409 or 409+ - a second vote. Reliable, easy to use, effective - have been using them here for about 3 years, absolutely no problems at all.
Make sure you set up the admin notifications emails, so they can tell you if a disk fails!
