Advertising Blowout
Posted by linitech, 02-10-2004, 10:59 PM |
I have been working in the marketing department for a hosting / computer sales and networking company for about 8 years now. I have found that trying to sell standard hosting accounts is not worth the effort that we were putting into it. We are however doing pretty well with our reseller account. I attribute this to the entrepreneur instincts that many of us have in them.
I would like to get some feedback from everyone (questions, comments, suggestions, what works, what does not work etc) regarding advertising and obtaining resellers.
What tactics do you think work the best? Local advertising, newspaper, search engine submission, banner ads etc. What works for you? What is a waste of time?
Hope to get some good feedback and help not only myself but others.

I have mentioned this often and I will say it again...try to start off small and once you are secure build up...likewise start locally and capture the local market and make yourselves well known and established and then move up

Much agreed BVS.
Local marketing worked extremely well for us and is a great way to build a company. We noticed actually meeting our customers face-to-face opened the door to many other business opportunities.

Thats what we did when we first started out and we still continue to do so. Schedule meetings with local customers and go out and do a presentation and explain things. This way they gain trust in you and not to mention they begin referring a lot of people your way

Work on your site is also good idea. Like Submit your site in major search engines, make it professional look and optimize it with your local keywords.

r2h,
Do you think that it is worth jockeying for position on search engines? I have found that there are so many hosting companies out there that it is hard to keep yourself on the top.

Most hosts wont give out their "best" tactic's.

We are talking about general practices, not specific marketing tactics.

Home in on a target audience and exploit it. This may be a "local" market such as a town or as big as a specific country.
Dont bother with $20 banner campaigns or "100,000 popunders for just $1" type adverts. Save your money until you can afford good quality, targetted advertising such as a big run of google adwords.
With advertising such as adwords you might not see results right away. Dont give up after a month. It took us about 6 months to tweak our adverts with them into a workable model. We now spend around $2k/month their and have seen amazing signup rates.
