problem with FrontPage extensions and mpm-itk

Posted by larwilliams, 11-28-2009, 01:25 PM
Hi, Since I enabled mpm-itk on my cPanel server, the FrontPage extensions are not working. I wouldn't have known this unless a client hadn't pointed it out to me today. It keeps giving a "503 Service Temporarily Unavailable" error message. Everything else is running fine at this point. Switching back to Prefork resolves this certain issue. Here is an example: http://www.domain.com/_vti_bin/_vti_...e=webadmin.htm The error_log from Apache shows this: [Fri Nov 27 21:06:24 2009] [error] [client 174.116.97.205] (13)Permission denied: unable to connect to cgi daemon after multiple tries: /usr/local/frontpage/version5.0/apache-fp/_vti_bin/fpexe I looked up the error in Google, and got only this: http://www.web-shelf.com/public/cach...ter-multip.htm Unfortunately, it is for Debian and not CentOS (what our cPanel stuff runs on). Any ideas? I already have tried figuring this out with cPanel support, but neither of us could get it to work. I know some people here are using itk as well. Hopefully one of you has encountered this before.

Hi! Remember: itk change the user ID of the process, so, please post: ls -l /usr/local/frontpage/version5.0/apache-fp/_vti_bin/fpexe and let's check that. I hope to help, Ildefonso Camargo

This is what I get -rwxr-xr-x 1 root bin 7549 Nov 29 02:47 /usr/local/frontpage/version5.0/apache-fp/_vti_bin/fpexe

Ok, that's ok there. Now, lets check this: apache2 -t -D DUMP_MODULES 2>&1 |grep -i cgi If that doesn't work: httpd -t -D DUMP_MODULES 2>&1 | grep -i cgi and paste output here.

Hi, Thanks again for trying to help. The output I get is proxy_scgi_module (static) cgi_module (static)

ok..... did you compiled that apache from source?, or was that installed as a package. I don't see the cgid module enabled, which is funny, because the log that you are getting use to mean a problem with cgid, so, maybe it is another problem, or, your cgi modules is looking for cgid??? (it shouldn't). Now, it can be a problem with FrontPage extensions, maybe frontpage extensions use cgid by default (I haven't used fp extensions in a loooong time, so, I don't know).

That is the key point. Microsoft doesn't even support FrontPage anymore (and hasn't for several years). I'd seriously consider this fact before implementing something that's long since obsolete.
