Billing / Client software
Posted by InSite, 10-10-2003, 07:33 AM |
Hiya,
I apologise if this thread has been done a million times, but I cant find a definitive answer (as there probably isnt one!).
I have decided to resell some of my server space to help meet prices, and am looking for a billing system to manage my clients.
The three main choices seem to be between WHM AutoPilot, ClientExec and ModernBill, of which at first glance ModernBill seems to be the most 'complete' product.
I am hoping people could vote on their favourite, and maybe post any factors to take into consideration?
Thanks

ClientExec, out of those. Full of features, not too many, fairly easy to use, and nice layout.
I think ModernBill is way over the top. It has so many features and configuration options you will spend more time configuring it then you will supporting your clients!
I've never used WHM AutoPilot but I have been told by quite a few individuals that it isn't that great.
I personally believe a custom built solution is always the best way to go. If you are fairly good at programming in any language, then making your own billing system wouldn't be any problem.

Thanks for the advice. You got me thinking - after seeing all the negative comments about ModernBill, and not being really satisfied with the feature set of the others, I'm going to write my own. I had already written a download script with support tickets and FAQs, so there isnt that much work to do to add host ordering sections and recurring payments.
Thanks again

I can make script using PHP & Mysql, so I write my own.
It's simple enough. I integrate it with WHM/CPanel using WHM
accounting module and with eNom / OnlineNIC using API.
If you know PHP & Mysql, you can write your own too
to satisfy yourself.

True, but its hard to write integration modules to PayPal, Authorize, 2CheckOut and have them all mingle together into one custom billing script. I found ModernBill a wonderful solution. Provides a method of billing, support, and server management.

Im writing my own automated Hosting Manager that I will be selling, its made from the ground up for PayPal, its mainly for people jest starting up on a hosting business. So far the stuff I have in it seams to be working great and its really easy to use. It has a real strong MySQL backend. It does the invoices and every thing else that I need it to, like automatically suspending accounts if there payments get too far behind. Im also adding a feature where it can setup free accounts. Im going to be selling it for under $30 and im going to be offering it to resellers for about $10-$15 each. The reason I started making it is because I buy reseller hosting but I cant afford to spend any money on stuff like WHM autopilot. This does support mutable servers and you can limit the signups on each package.

I'd go with ClientExec, as its more flexible, but MB and WHMPilot have automatic account creation options.

I've never used the others but I find WHMPilot to be very good. The support is very responsive and very helpful. The order form looks really nice

Great,
I've not seen this poll for about 3 weeks
ModernBill without question; the new 4.1.0 version looks simply amazing with more features and functionality than you can shake a stick at.
As a former user of phpManager, you can see why I enthuse over ModernBill

Every hosting customer has different requirements and needs. We couldn't find any software listed clients the way we wanted or would do what we wanted...so we got our own coded by a very talented PHP developer who is a long time customer of ours. We do most stuff in-house and our house includes the whole nexus family - staff and customers.
Modernbill etc - sheer overkill. We just needed a system that contained all client info and was listable via date joined, server, plan. A system that sent out renewal notices and alerted when people were overdue etc. We have no need for processor integration and all that jazz. We get an order, client pays, we confirm, we set them up, we enter their details in the system and then any upgrades or server moves are all recorded.

The only thing I would say about ModernBill is that you'd better hope you never need a refund.
I was told that "it will be taken care of" on 14th March, then told it was being "issued" on 03rd July, but I've not received anything yet, least of all a reply to my e-mail of 30th August asking them what's happened to it.
I may have considered it again in the future, but not from a company with business practises like that.

WHM is very good and I will probably switch back to them shortly now that they have invoicing, however..
I currently use Clientexec which I really like too, but there appears to be some growing tension on the forums there about the quality of upgrades. I've pretty much stopped my upgrading due to a growing tiredness of re-customizing my site with only minor tweaks released.
In any event, Clientexec has been great for me so we'll stick it out and see.
