On becoming a reseller
Posted by Lo Fi Cat, 08-27-2003, 02:41 PM |
Hello. I've been looking for some time at various resellers and am now working on putting together a short list to choose from. This forum has helped immeasurably in my efforts to date. Thank you to all who have unknowingly contributed to my research.
As part of the selection process, I contacted a number of highly-touted companies (on webhostingtalk) several days ago and only received one reply. That was from Melitaweb.
While Melitaweb's prompt response may not necessarily be indicative of their hosting prowess, the fact that they even replied lends a particular amount of comfort.
What would you think if you were looking for a company to associate with and none replied to your queries? I wouldn't feel very confident. Is this what I should expect from their support department? Kudos to Melitaweb for your prompt and professional reply (if not overly formal).
I'm going to mail several more companies and see what transpires. My present list includes:
melitaweb.net
dathorn.com
vshosting.net
Several other organizations, such as unitedHosting.co.uk, seem great but aren't a match for me at this time. If anyone has any further suggestions, I'd be happy to consider them.
What am I looking for?
Transparent reselling (branding, custom nameservers et al). More bang for the buck, but not at a loss of quality and service (aren't we all?). Longevity - I've a responsibility to my clients - I can't afford to associate with a company that may not be here next week. Good/prompt support.
I'll be away for circa 1 week, but plan on making a decision upon my return. After I make a decision, I'll reply with an update. I'll also post an update after some time has passed.
Many thanks,
Rob

Well in my view you should never go with the companies that not respond to your queries within 24 hours

from what I am told and from what I seen
dothorn.com is very good. I looked at the customers response and from what I see
Fast
Reliable
if it does have down time they notify people the resoning
and all time great
there was another host if I find it I will send you the link.

You are only as good as the parent host you decide to go with. Opting for more bang at a lower price can often lead to less bucks in the future when things go wrong
Dathorn seem to have a good following, apart from them I would consider raising your budget slightly.

It depends on how you contacted them. If it was done via PM here, then you need to remember that most members do not have email PM notification turned on.
If it was via their contact info/page on their site, then 24 hours should have gotten you more than one response.
Also, unless they are a one man shop, their support department is much more likely to have multiple people answering queries, which generally results in rapid turn-around time.
In summary, it depends on how you contacted them.

I am with VSHosting - and as I have said a few times here to others (and no I am not on their payroll!) I have yet to fault them.
Support, which I think is the most important factor, is cracking with superb turn round speeds on their tickets.
I short listed them last time and then went else where, but have now moved from 2 different servers to just one from CSHosting - Mark and the guys are top notch.
Give them a try - you will be suprised!

I just moved to vshosting also, it's too early to give you a real "review" but so far they have been outstanding, all mails and forum posts replied to pretty much instantly, i can't really comment on much else after just a day, but we couldn't have asked for a better start.
I would say though that 24 hours is more than enough time for anybody to respond.
Support is obviously an issue for you, and although i wouldn't go with somebody just because they replied quickly, the ones that have not got back to you after a few days i'd cross off your list.
As for "transparent reselling" you need to make sure you look at that carefully, 95% of hosts will offer private nameservers, but most of them forget to mention the actual name of the server you'll be placed on, a couple of the lower priced hosts we looked at used server names like server1.theirname.com meaning that's seen in all your mail headers making the private nameservers you have almost pointless.
vshosting are totally transparent, i've no idea about the others.
good luck

Follow-up
I've decided to use VSHosting.net as my host. I've been there several days. They've responded quickly to all of my questions. I had several issues pertaining to my first client, which were all resolved quickly. So far, I'm very impressed.
I plan to follow-up this message after I've been with VSHosting for some time. Hopefully, the level of service I've received so far will continue.
If you've any questions about my experiences with VSHosting, I'd be happy to answer them in this thread. Again, though I've been with VSHosting for only a short time, I recommend them to others interested in becoming a reseller.
Many thanks,
Rob

We used to work for a couple of those mentioned in this topic before we decided to venture on our own. Some are reputable and our admins have good thing to say about them, but there are those who also are on the other side of the coin as well. Guess everyones entitled to their own opinion.

Consider ultraunix.net. They have a 2weeks trial and the support is excellent! Uptime and Speed is great too!

I've been with VSHost for several month now, and I see a great difference to other I tried before:
Most are friendly, fast supporting when you are new aor just still withing the trial periode.
The their interest goes more and more down to help, or there comes nothing more.
The hardest in that respect I learned with LONEX/NTC Hosting: After 6 month they still had gotten 100 $ too much and I got back nothing and no more response.
This the big diference with VHS is: also after being with they for several month and althought I have always lot of problems and need lot of help, they are willed and able to help nevertheless quick and complete. Such I also not seen with companies which take 3* more money. A very rare combination of knowledge, helpfulness, and good pricing that is.
Over all: Best I found within 2 years of intensive looking around and testing and taking several disadvanteges.

Make sure you consider whether each host allows overselling -- you may or may not want that, but if you do, it can make a huge difference in the amount of data transfer (bandwidth) you need. (VSHosting allows it; I don't think dathorn does.)

Hello. I don't mean to be rude, but some of the replies to this thread make me wonder if select individuals who've posted read the thread. I do appreciate your feedback, but some of the replies are... interesting and/or out of place.
Enjoy,
Rob

I'm glad you didn't choose melitaweb.net
I would have chosen dathorn.com over vshosting.net but they weren't (aren't) accepting new customers while their new billing system is being implemented.
Good choice and please follow up with some reviews

Well, meanwhile I got a feedback to my posting above, and the manager of LONEX had contact me and I got back my money.
Thanks.

Would be interested to know why you're glad they didn't choose us Rossman. We have never had a bad review and our customers are all satisfied so I was wondering what you thought was so bad about us. It would help us to improve our service if you could give some kind of feedback.

I would suggest Dathorn. I have an account with them for months and unless you have a higher budget to choose something more expensive, but by no means better, they will do with your needs...
Andrew is always prompt to response the tickets.

How about going with RackShack.net
If we buy a Pentium 4 Dedicated Package. Would it be a better choise of starting Webhosting with normal account setups as well as resellers setup
