how many hosts using monitoring service

Hello,
Is it asking to much by asking host if they use third party server monitoring provider to monitor there servers?
I just started a new thread in the Web Hosting Requests, and would like to know what you think http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showth...hreadid=100704
Regards,

Most would. We use Alertra and my sysadmin uses another monitoring system.

No it is not too much to ask. I know several that do it, alternately I suggest you look at http://findmyhosting.com all hosts listed there are monitored by alertra and uptime is posted for the world to see.

Aussie Bob,
I'm on WHM / CPanel would it be possible for you or your tech's to move (copy over) my reseller sites to your server. Of course you would need to get temporary root access to my current server.
I just need to know if you can do that so I can talk to my current host.

Johhny, he will still not be able to create the site with the same username. He will have the same problem I did.

Well I don't because I could never rely on the ones I used in the past.
I use a program call Server's Alive http://www.woodstone.nu/salive/
And monitor my own servers at the data center from my own office.
I highly recommend it.

Greetings:
Yes, we use a monitoring service.
Thank you.

Yes he will.
But I don't mind investing my time and updating the username in php, etc,.. as long as I'm sure the server I'm moving to will work.
superfaestservers is down all day, and some of your other servers have issues.
Alan - what do you want me to do - can you help me?
I looked at httpme uptime and I'm looking for a backup in case you don't replace the superfaestservers today.

Incidentally, I am using the free EasyMonitor to monitor my site and it does it at a 15 minutes interval from two points. Would that be sufficient ?
I understand that Alertra do have several plans for monitoring, if you are with them, which plans are you currently on ?
I am just wondering if I should switch ?
I know the original post was in regards to reseller's account. I am not a reseller but just hosting my own sites on a dedicated.

I'm not an expert by any means but I think EasyMonitor service is more then sufficient to monitor web site, and you can't beat the price.
In the 3 years I never monitored server/sites until Yahoo, Google and other search engines start dropping off my site becouse the server was off line.

Johnny,
Thanks for that. I have always been skeptical about free stuffs and was wondering if the paid services would be better in any ways.
Perhaps part of the value-added with Alertra.com is that it supports SMS and and so on. But now that my Cellphone has an email address tagged to it, it would definitely serve its purpose.
So far I have not seen my server go down apart from the false alarms I get each time I reboot the server. So I guess the 15 minutes interval should do just fine.
Thanks again.

We use Alertra and Easymonitor.
We preffer Alertra because it supports SMS notification.

I think he's referring to the post i made. Depending on the size of the host, and the number of servers which they have, it can be asking too much. We personally provide in house monitoring solutions free with all servers, but can you imagine somewhere like rackshack having that done for all of their servers?
|
Posted by The3bl, 01-02-2003, 07:05 PM |
Well maybe RackShack with 10,000 servers, but I have a few monitored with Altera and it works just fine. The $10.00 or so it cost to monitor compared to what I make per server is well spent. I also use an in house monitor that is hosted on my backup support server. 2 of them to be exact but then I want to know if a server goes down long before my clients do.

There is nothing wrong in asking a host if they use a monitoring system, I would hope most would use one if not multiple.
We find that a combination of WebSitePulse and ServersAlive does the job well.

Do you guys that are using 3rd party solutions just monitor http or are you also monitoring (FTP, HTTPS, SMTP, DNS, POP3, IMAP4)
We also use our own in house service as well as our Data Centers

Greetings:
We run five health checks on our servers using a monitoring system that is not on the same network:
Database monitoring which connects to our database and runs a sample query to ensure the database is running, and that it can reply to a valid query.
Content monitoring to ensure the content delivery system (PHP, ASP, etc.) is working, that pages have not been hacked, and that SSL is working.
Port monitoring to ensure SMTP and other critical services are working; the port monitoring uses both send and receive strings to verify the right service is working on the right port.
Ping monitoring to make sure routers and servers are alive.
Performance monitoring to ensure server load, # of processes, CPU utilization, disk space, etc. are within expected parameters.
Thank you.
