Spam issue at Leaseweb

Posted by Urosino, 10-28-2008, 07:16 PM
Spam issue at Leaseweb I've sent out a single opt in newsletter to my members for the first time and got two spam complaints from spam cop that were forwarded to me from leaseweb. Some people must have signed up using somebody elses email address. How grave is such a complaint and what do I need to do to avoid this in the future? The emails contained an unsubscribe link etc.

Send reminder emails - Are you sure you want to be a part of this list? and give them a blatant option, also add the comment " Verifying Subscribers to decrease spam false positives ". Really there isn't much you can do, get a report of who submitted the spam report? Use Double opt-in. 1) they fill out their email address. 2) they receive a link in that email address which they need to follow to confirm, that its their email address and they want to be part of a list.

Notify leaseweb that SpamCop is a user-ran spam database and it's very possible for legitimate messages to be flagged as spam. Make leaseweb aware that SpamCop functions on "donations' and it's not a neutral spam utility. Your third step is to lawyer up and go after spamcop, unlike Spamhaus Spamcop does not operate as an un-biased neutral spam filtering facility and is held liable for it's actions. The reason I speak out against SpamCop the way I do is because we used to submit all of our spam messages to them. We donated monthly and everything went good, for awhile. Then we started to have the spammers contact us and SpamCop questioning the spam being reported. It was your typical run of the mill spam but apparently the money the spammers were giving Spamcop, were more then the money we were giving to SpamCop so now we only utilize SpamHaus as they are a neutral un-biased, un-funded by spammers, and unlike SpamCop that just posts user-generated information, Spamhaus goes after the spammers. I don't recall SpamCop ever being caught up in any controversy trying to cleanup the net. I'd also paste the following urls to Leaseweb in your response. It would appear to me they have bigger fish to be going after.http: //www.spamhaus.org/sbl/sbl.lasso?query=SBL68924http://www.spamhaus.org/sbl/sbl.lasso?query=SBL68628http://www.spamhaus.org/sbl/sbl.lasso?query=SBL68615

We quickly resolved an issue with SpamCop by simply following their procedures and adding an accurate SPF record to the client's DNS. SpamCop delisted them in 24 hours. __________________ Thomas J.
