Spam Complaint Domain Suspended

I use a web developer using a reseller hosting account. One fine night I found one of my domains disappeared. Great agony at night hours because I very much fear it. Any way after hours of pathetic support chasing I got reply that "some one complained about spam through a lot of domains and mine was one and the domain was suspended. Now after receiving my support request they found it false and so on.... In all it was 5 days down. If some how, I haven't checked it, God knows how long might have been the downtime. I have some 60 domains. Please advise and have your say on: 1) What regular precaution and check I should perform. 2) I have not received any email for suspension of domain. How to watch in such situation. I incidently checked the site and came to know about its status after some research. 3) My Host was very prompt then the domain registrar. The immediately informed me about the clean status of server use. And I was quite confident of my clean server as I have 10 years with various hosts. So I request all of you, please must say something on the issue for the sake of people like me who devotedly follow this forum for their survival. Thanks in advance.

It is normal to suspend an account if a spam complaint is received against the domain. This is done to prevent the server IP from black listing. But host should make sure whether the domain is actually spamming or not and suspend it if domain is spamming and inform the client that the domain is suspended for spamming. As a precaution make sure that all the scripts installed in your account are updated to the latest version and they are not exploited. Did you set a mail account in that domain as the contact address?

I have seen many cases where my domain as well as clients have been spoofed to send spam. A spammer can spoof my address and send mail to make it look like it is comming from me. In these cases if I blacklist anyone, I always blacklist the server IP that is spamming me. To be honest hosting that many domain names on a Reseller Account is a lot. I would suggest a VPS server. It would give you a lot more freedom. On your reseller account you may not have much freedom to view mail logs.

Make sure you have an e-mail address on file with your webhosting provider that is not using the domain name you are hosting with them. This is why it is generally a good idea to have a Gmail or ISP e-mail address with your hosting provider. It also needs to be an e-mail address that you check regularly. If your domain name is domain.com and your hosting provider has your contact e-mail address as bill@domain.com, then if domain.com gets suspended, they cannot inform you of this. Your webhosting provider should have sent you an e-mail after the account was suspended letting you know of its suspension, but again if that e-mail address was the domain name in question, then you would not have received that message.

Amazing response as usual, I thank to all of you. Now my moral is again in good spirit. To "~ServerPoint~" The registrar had suspended the domain who is other than my great host. The host I found from this forum. I mentioned they were prompt than the domain registrar and immediately informed me about the clear status of the website. The main point here is, whether they should inform me or not? After all the most affected one may be culprit may be innocent too, as " atechstl " and "SPaReK" gave hint about spoof and separate domain email. I have separate domain email and other details with the domain registrar. But a strange thing I didn't get any information from their side. They have told me about some complaint without any details. I have asked for it. What I have been told is a very reputed company made complaint about a lot of domain and they immediately took action. Thats ok. But My final worry is about the information regarding suspension, don't I deserve it?. In my case host and domain registrar are separate companies. The other concern is about maintaining the server and scripts. I completely agree with you people it should be updated one. So in my peculiar case host and registry are separate and the good thing about hosting providers are, they are more prompt in reply. But the registrar is not that prompt as you can see with above case. That made me looser without my knowledge. That made me simply nervous. I am a small web developer and I cant check manually very now and then all the sites. As per my experience I don't mind outage and failure and accidental things. But what we small timer expect is please be human atleast communicate the matter. In my case I was told to check the status of all those domains from control panel. OK if I suspect any thing I can. But any major action should be communicated If I am not wrong. So I again thank all of for great support. All above suggestions are very useful and I am implementing it immediately. But please continue with view that the registrar is other than host.

The domain registrar did the similar thing again. Suspended one more domain. This time also no information. Previous ticket is open, they didnt reply and this next one. I will update here as I get reply from them.

Was it GoCrappy (GoDaddy) that suspended your domain? If so, you're not alone. See www.nodaddy.com -- it's a nightmare from what I hear. I almost made the mistake of transferring all my domains to them, until I came across their ridiculous practice being reported in forums, blogs and even major news outlets. I still think suspending a whole domain for spam is crazy. Why not simply disable the mail server? Or if a PHP script or forum is hurting, why not disable ONLY that one component that is causing the problem? E-mail the site owner, and give him/her a chance. Most will do so willingly, there's no need to kill an ant bed with an atomic bomb (the knee-jerk practice of killing a whole domain simply because one piece of it is having a problem). Some of these "hosts" out there shouldn't even be in business.
