Real Time Remote Linux Hardware Monitoring Script/App?

Posted by audibleprofits, 02-27-2008, 04:45 PM
Hi, I have an AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 3000+ machine thats running Linux - CentOS. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good server/hardware monitoring script or app that will allow monitoring of the following items in real time. Also I'd like to log and view the historical data. A script that stores this data in mysql database would be ideal. Processor TemperatureHard Drive(s) TemperatureRam Usage - OverallRam Usage for each running Process/ServiceCPU Usage - OverallCPU Usage for each running Process/Service Also anything else that might be useful. Thanks in advance. Dino

Is running an application like Cacti a bit too bloated for your uses? It'll monitor all of those and much more through SNMP and display it for you in graph form or raw data.

I would recommend Cacti as well. Just install an SNMP daemon on the server and it can watch those counters. "Real time" monitoring generally does not exist in the real world but you can cut your poll times to 1-2 minutes if you're really picky. An SNMP poll should not generate too much network traffic but it can be an issue if you have a very large network with thousands of devices.

Hi Guys, Just want to say thanks again for the Cati recommendation. We finally got it up and running the other day, still playing around and learning but very nice app. Thanks, Dino

You might also want to check out Munin - http://munin.projects.linpro.no/

Munin is nice, but sometime it takeing up huge resources

Say What? Munin is so light I barely even notice it's running on a cluster of Xen VMs. I found Cacti to be more feature-complete (and more visually appealing!), but I have to give credit to Munin for the fact that it is WAY easier to install and manage. They all have different usage scenarios, so it's all a matter of personnal needs. I could easily recommend both.

Munin was easy to install with very minimal footprint on the server resources. I gave up with Cacti. Easy to install with yum cacti install once you get all the required dependencys. However, Cactic is way too sensitive and a pain in the *** to config properly. They really do need to write a better manual.
