How to send XML to a payment gateway

Hi all. I need a little help with XML and wondering if someone would be kind enough to enlighten me. I am implementing a payment API into my own shopping cart system. I know the XML element names that I need to send, but what I don't know is how to send XML via HTTP FORM? Also, I am going to need get receive some response codes and such from the server I am sending it to, how is that going to work? I'm not asking someone to hold my hand and tell me everything, I would just like someone to give me a brief run down on how it works, so I am bootstrapped with the knowledge I need to do my own research.
