FreeBSD 7 outperforms linux ?
Posted by inteltechs, 03-07-2008, 09:06 AM |
Dramatic improvements in performance and SMP scalability shown by various database and other benchmarks, in some cases showing peak performance improvements as high as 350% over FreeBSD 6.X under normal loads and 1500% at high loads. When compared with the best performing Linux kernel (2.6.22 or 2.6.24) performance is 15% better. Results are from benchmarks used to analyze and improve system performance, results with your specific work load may vary.
have you guys seen the differences? I haven't seen that much differences at all.

Are you using a 4-core or greater system?
We've just started to play with the latest stuff. Seems very promising for database services.

One of the developers has posted a couple of presentations that contain some details:

http://people.freebsd.org/~kris/scaling/7.0%20Preview.pdf
Certainly some of the graphs do suggest a factor of 10 performance improvement in particular situations. Other documents by the same individual suggest that FreeBSD currently has a slight performance lead, but admit that the Linux developers are working hard to close the gap.

Linux still annihilates FreeBSD on 16-32 core systems, largely because there's a lot more midrange hardware out there running it and it's proven stable in those situations (e.g. big Oracle boxen).
However - with FreeBSD's improvement and considering the basic systems I order every few weeks come with a minimum of 8 cores then maybe people will start trying it on larger systems...
