| MySQL is a relational database management system (RDBMS).
It's open source and free to use (paid one is there too).
It is important to run database driven applications for example shopping carts.

| Hi!
It should be mentioned it can live on Windows and Linux. Sadly..most people install it via rpm. Better performance may be obtained by using precompiled binaries..or..quite possibly..compiling from source.

| If you want the acronym broken down, MySQL is a Structured Query Language, named after Monty Widenius's daughter 'My'.
But as for how MySQL is relevant to your forums, it is this: all of your forums data will be stored there!

| rofl, but an interesting question. Ever been at yahoo or cnn...they most probably make use of mysql [or they might use mssql, oracle etc. ...]. Hosts offering linux plans offer mysql to drive your CMS website like drupal, joomla or wordpress

| Mysql is RDBMS..
this works with sql queries, used to create database and manage it.
