unrouteable mail domain everytime I send out email
Posted by hbhb, 07-08-2007, 10:12 PM |
Hi,
My mail server suddenly went into chaos. Everytime I send out an email it
retruns me back an email automatically telling me example:
"unrouteable mail domain "gmail.com".
"unrouteable mail domain "yahoo.com".
Etc.
I try to reinstall exim
#/scripts/exim4 --force
I even reboot the server but nothing works.
What is the problem and how do I fix this problem? This is the first time I
came to experience this problem

Check if your server can resolve those domains (try pinging them). Also, if you have a firewall running try turning it off and seeing if it will work again.
If when pinging it says it can't find the domain, then check your /etc/resolv.conf and make sure the nameservers listed are working properly.

Check your DNS resolvers.
cat /etc/resolv.conf
What do you see listed?
Edit:
Jakiao beat me to it.

Thanks. that fixed my problem.
But how on earth did my resolv.conf changed by itself is one question.
It changes all my nameserver IP address to my server IP address instead of my datacenter ISP DNS

The question you have to ask is what changes did you make to your system? Did you install new software, install any updates, or anything that could have caused this? Even the most innocent things can sometimes turn out to be culprits of annoying problems.

I just run a cronjob backup script i customize myself yesterday night. that's all. i'm not sure if that will change the resolver. i will check again this midnight!

Unless that script edits /etc/resolv.conf, I can't see it being a cause (obviously). But if you wrote it and it was the program altering /etc/resolv.conf, then you obviously would have known that it did this.
One possibility is that someone changed it themselves. E.g. a person whom you've given SSH access, or a person who doesn't belong. I'd do a quick check of the AUTHPRIV logs just in case.

Is this a cpanel server. Sometimes upcp will change files for no reason such as httpd.conf . If someone knows why upcp needs to restart apache let me know.

Well, i have changed my cron hours for upcp to daytime for me to monitor.
